What is the Cuba Professional League?

The Cuba Professional League, also known as the Cuban Baseball Championship, is a professional baseball league in Cuba. Established in 1904, it is one of the oldest leagues in Latin America and has a rich history and tradition. The league consists of six teams from different regions across Cuba: Isla de la Juventud, Pinar del Río, La Habana, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus y Cienfuegos.

How does the competition work?

The season typically runs from October to March with each team playing 90 games against all other teams. The regular season winner advances directly to the championship series while runners-up play-off for the second spot. The best-of-seven championship series determines the overall champion.

Who are some notable players?

Over the years many talented players have emerged from this league. One of them is José Contreras who played for both Pinar del Río and La Habana before defecting to Major League Baseball (MLB) where he had successful stints with several teams including New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.
